Juror's Comments

BEST OF SHOW
50 Jackie Brantley
Strong sense of composition and control of tonal structure of painting. The abstracted forms and color palette reminded me of early American abstract painters like Arthur Dove.

FIRST PLACE
9 Peggy Nunn
Sensuous use of the materials. Convincing use of complementary color to create vibrant visual impact. Reminiscent of late James Rosenquist with completely different imagery.

SECOND PLACE

40 Ingrid Carson
Strong composition. The white forms in the foreground create a lively handwriting across the dark background. Good sense of touch with the brush. The color makes me think of Charles Birchfield’s watercolors. Beautiful and subtle. Strong choices within context. A strong graphic statement.

THIRD PLACE
3 David Phillips
Beautiful color. The space is well organized; subtle variations in color within the context of essentially a middle range of values. I was reminded of American painter Nell Blaine.

MERIT AWARD

51 Gail Cunningham
Strong composition. Well organized and dynamic. I enjoyed the colored grays playing off against the small moments of pure color. More abstract, but reminiscent of Wagner Thiebauld’s compositions.

HONORABLE MENTION
75 Ellin Baskin
Light and sensitive touch. Subtle color. Interesting variety in the handwriting clearly reminiscent of Monet without being a slavish imitation.
