Allan Hobbs

Born in Brookhaven, Mississippi, Allan Hobbs grew up surrounded by the artistic and historical heritage of the Deep South.   Brookhaven’s proximity to New Orleans brought enriched culture to the area, providing inspiration and encouraging artistic expression.   Allan’s family and surroundings also gave the impetus to express his artistic talents.

Asked when he knew that he was an artist, Allan responds, “I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t drawing or painting.”   He excelled in art throughout his education but never considered it a viable option for a career.   Instead, he used his talents in many different fields, including architecture, teaching, cooking, construction, software development, and counseling.   During his studies in the counseling program at RTS, Jackson, MS, he was able to acknowledge that he was suffering from a severe depression, possibly caused by the frustration of trying to split his passion for art from his pursuit of a career.   After the events of 9/11, he was compelled to re-think his career choices, and finally made the decision to pursue his passion.

Now Allan fully embraces the essential nature of art in life and paints as a full-time career.   Sandra Phaup, a Columbia, SC native and artist was a significant component in this transition.   She introduced him to his primary teacher and mentor, Ilona Royce-Smithkin (http://www.becomingpictures.com/films/ilonas_trailer.html) of New York, star of two ETV series on painting.

Allan is noted for his still-lifes and landscapes, but his specialty is portraits, including portraits of people, pets, and houses.   In his portraits he focuses on capturing the personality and soul of the subjects, working closely with them to achieve those goals.   He also works from photographs.   He has the heart of an Impressionist, with emphasis on the play of lights and darks and vibrant colors.

Allan’s works have been displayed at the Back Porch Studio and Gallery, the Hart Gallery, and the Village Artists Gallery. His works will soon be available in Mississippi.
