Like many young boys in the 1950’s, Larry LeFebvre had a great fondness for automobiles…old and new, stock and custom. A film about automobile styling in his high school Shop class convinced him that he wanted to become an Industrial Designer. After completing course work in Machine Design at Chicago Technical College he took a position with a former General Motors industrial designer who had a private practice designing products using the then relatively new material of “fiberglass, which is still the primary material used in his sculptures. Classes at Illinois State University and independent study introduced him to the works of his favorite sculptors: Constantin Brancusi, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Jean Arp and Isamu Noguchi. The work of those sculptors and the elements of industrial and auto design continue to inspire his sculpture.
Mr. LeFebvre’s work has been exhibited in numerous competitive and invitational exhibits and galleries in Illinois and South Carolina. His work is included in several public, corporate and private collections, including the S.C. Arts Commission, and the S.C. State Museum. He is currently represented by the I. Pinckney-Simmons Galleries in Columbia and Beaufort, South Carolina.
Artist's Statement
I believe that art (especially sculpture) should give the viewer a sensual rather than an intellectual experience. I like to setup and “balance” competing forces or stresses in my sculptures. I also like my sculptures to invite the viewer to further explore the work
by touching them to intensify the sensual experience. Although, understandably, museums and galleries prohibit touching a work, with proper care an owner of my pieces can enjoy this additional dimension of the work. Larry can be reached at :
