Mary Catherine Newman

Mary Catherine Newman is the director of the Visual Arts Program in the Palmetto Center for the Arts magnet school at Richland Northeast High School. She earned an MAT in Art Education and a BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in painting and drawing from the University of South Carolina. Her work has been exhibited in Lipscomb Gallery, the Art Garage, Bus Stop Gallery, USC Garnet and Black Publications and the SC State Fair., where she was a 2004 State Fair Award Winner. She recently furthered her education by completing intensive studio work at the Governor's School for the Arts.

She was honored to be the only high school visual art program to participate in the Columbia Festival of the Arts in 2007. Over 40 PCA 2-D, 3-D and digital works were exhibited at the Richland County Public Library from April 25th until June20th, 2007. The PCA Visual Arts program is also honored to show a collection of works in January 2008 at the Martin Gallery. A collection of 20 works titled, Inner Visions, showed at the internationally acclaimed Martin Gallery in Charleston, SC in March of 2006. MrsCon. Newman's students was also featured in Mochamagazine in July of 2006 and at Solstice Restaurant in Columbia. Her students have won numerous State Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mention Awards in the SC Scholastic Competition as well as Archibald Rutledge Scholarship Winner (2006-2007). In 2006 she was honored to receive an award for the most student winners in the South Carolina State Fair art competition. Her PCA students continue to participate in community outreach art programs such as with the SC school for the Blind and Recording and the Columbia Museum of Art.
