Tommie Carr Toner

Calling Birmingham, Alabama “home,” Tommie was reared in a Navy family where she quickly attained a sense of wandering and wondering. She earned a BA Degree from The Florida State University in Speech and Language Pathology, a Master of Education at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, with a major in Counseling, and a doctorate from the University of South Carolina with foci on curriculum and instruction in the adult education milieu. She taught for 37 years in all levels of public education in Tennessee, Germany, Washington State, and SC, ending her career as an administrator and clinical associate professor in the College of Education, USC-Columbia in 2001.

Extensive travel has impacted her view of the world, culture, and art. She has studied art at the Instituto de Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico with Sam Seaman, a London artist and professor, and with Puerto Rican studio artist and teacher, Carlos Caban. She has also taken classes with Campbell Frost, Ilona Royce-Smithkin, Khaldoune Benecheikh, and Rob Shaw, in Columbia, SC, and Nan Carver in Beaufort, SC.
Tommie enjoys learning various techniques and styles of painting. Her favorite technique is the use of the palette knife as she applies layers of color creating bold textures on large canvases. She feels she is continuously exploring and changing under the influences of the impressionists and especially, Lynn Boggess, a West Virginian landscape painter.

She is a member of the Log Cabin Art Guild, Trenholm Art Guild, the Back Porch Painters, About Face (Columbia Museum of Art), and the Beaufort Art Association. Her work can be found in private collections throughout the U.S. and Canada, and at the Beaufort Art Association Gallery in Beaufort, SC.
