Guest Speaker:  Judy Bolton Jarrett   Judy will demonstrate "White on White".

G. K. Chesterton, English philosopher, said, "White is not a mere absence of color; it is a shining and affirmative thing: as fierce as red, as definite as black."

"Those who know my work also know that I am a strong colorist -- the more intense, the better.  I truly think that as I get older, my art gets brighter! Might have something to do with aging eyes...   Because I'm constantly setting up challenges for myself, I decided in one of my painting sessions to see whether I could get as much power out of white as I do with red (I've done quite a few almost completely red paintings) or any other color, including black.  It has turned into an ongoing project in that I probably paint one or two mostly white paintings a month.  I hope to demonstrate how shades of white set up the contrast needed for an effective almost-monochromatic painting.

My first showing of this theme was at the Atalaya Arts Festival in 2009.  I was awarded third place (which was the top painting award)!  The two jurors commented at the awards ceremony that "she understands white."  Not quite sure what that meant (or means), but I enjoy the challenge!"  Judy Bolton Jarrett
