John Adam Hodge Visit

Our very own John Adams Hodge took us on an adventure at the September Guild Meeting. John is the pilot of a 1946 antique prop plane and literally slides the window open to take the images which make up his pictorial book South Carolina from the Air. He treated us to many of his spectacular photographs that he took from high up above South Carolina (and sometimes very low)! His book aims to include the diverse landscape that makes up South Carolina to include the quintessential light houses, coastline, urban areas, mountains, friendly people, and of course, Williams-Brice from the air. I would highly recommend giving this book a home in yours.

At the time of this posting, John’s book was #1 on Amazon’s Aviation Pictorial Books!

A summary of the book: a photographic documentary of the Palmetto State as seen from a 1946 antique airplane. It is a coffee table style book that depicts the geography and environment of the state and the connection between the land and its people. In addition to being a set of photographs that celebrate the diverse geography of South Carolina, the work also introduces the reader to diverse topics such as South Carolina's aviation history, airports, aircraft, and pilots. It also features sections on aerial geology, the environment, and aerial photography as art.

TAG’s Annual Still Hopes Show opened on August 4th, 2022.

The show was juried by Mark Anderson, MFA, Professor at Presbyterian College, Clinton SC and he left this lovely note on the show:

I walked into the space Saturday afternoon to discover framed works already installed. The works were well hung in a nicely balanced arrangement with thought given to pacing and grouping so as to promote a very pleasing visual rhythm. The show has both good variety and depth of reference to make the whole experience rewarding for any viewer. There’s a little something for everyone. I appreciated that the works were presented by number only as names and signatures were obscured to avoid any potential bias on my part.

I appreciate the opportunity to view the work of the fine artists of the Trenholm Artist Guild. As often happens when I spend time with other artists, I couldn’t wait to get back to my studio.

Congratulations to Gerard Erley for winning Best of Show with his piece, “ Night Fantasy” and Congratulations to all the winners!

A special thank you to the Still Hopes Art Committee (Dorothy, Shirley, Sue, Kitty) and the Still Hopes staff; TAG take-in and hanging volunteers; Co-chairs Renea Eshleman and Barbara Yongue; Sponsors of memorial awards: Sharon Funderburk, Renea Eshleman, Karen Jamrose, Joong Kim, David Phillips, Jeannie Branham; and Past Presidents Participants: David Phillips, Karen Jamrose, Renea Eshleman

Trenholm Artists Guild’s Annual Show at Best Mattress

The show was juried by Jane Nodine. Her summary of the show:

It is an honor for me to be invited to judge the 2022 Spring Show of the Trenholm Artist Guild. I was pleased to see a variety of styles, media, and subject matter. I congratulate you all for taking the risk to make your work public.
In this exhibition I selected works that met several criteria; technical skill – using established principles of design and composition as well as mechanical mastery, conceptual works – works that prod and challenge the viewer with ideas and images that veer from conditioned responses of beauty and aesthetics, vernacular works – works that may seem awkward and out of character to most established principles of design but in some manner poke at our sense of time, space, and reality.
While subject matter and composition are crucial to work, I encourage artists to pay close attention to mechanical skills such as paint application. Look at master works and original works by established artists. Practice mixing colors, vary brush strokes and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. This is where we learn our most important lessons. Pay close attention to mounting and framing works. Frames should work with the art and not overpower with heavy patterns or thick dimensions. Choose subject matter wisely and let your art voice reflect your vision. Seek out the unusual and avoid sentimental or overused subjects. Think of your art making much like a creative writer. You want to pull the viewer into the work and give them a taste, it can be bitter or sweet, but a taste they can feel and see.

Congratulations to Denise Greer for winning Best of Show with her piece, “ Tempest” and Congratulations to all the winners!
