Jean Capalbo

Bio:

I am a native to SC but have spent many years elsewhere. I attended Clemson and earned a MEd from The University of SC, after which I was involved in education In SC and in Germany. Since then, I have lived in Southern California; Columbia, SC; and Sedona, AZ. I have taken art classes at Santa Monica College, UCLA, USC, and while living in Sedona, was involved with an active arts community and participated in many exhibitions. In 2011, I moved back to Columbia and have now begun to paint seriously after a pause of a few years.

Artist Statement:

Abstract and abstract expressionism painting is relatively new for me. Throughout my life, my drawings and paintings have been primarily representational, often depicting people and animals in whimsical settings, and reflecting my pleasure of creating narratives with vivid color. At the present I am experimenting with, or perhaps more accurately, “discovering”, a variety of new media and techniques to work with. The abstracts that I have been producing over the past year have been driven more by the media and techniques than anything I can claim as artistic forethought or inspiration. I LOVE the PROCESS of freewheeling with paint, medium, collage materials, markers…and take inspiration from what I see emerging on the canvas. Sometimes the results to me are beautiful, or intriguing, or exciting. Occasionally all three. Often, however, the canvas gets tossed or gessoed over, but that’s part of the joy and process, too!
